The third Forum of China-ASEAN University (Country and Regional Studies) Think-Tank Network was held at China-ASEAN Research Institute (CARI) of Guangxi University in September.
The theme of this year’s forum was “Jointly Build a Closer China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future”. Over 60 scholars and experts from China, ASEAN countries and international organizations, as well as representatives from university think tanks attended the forum.

After the opening ceremony, three experts delivered keynote speeches. Talking about globalization and international cooperation, Eduardo Catroga, former finance minister of Portugal, pointed out that a globalized world is an irresistible trend, so that all countries should pursue dialogues and cooperation rather than disputes. Think tanks should provide policy support to enhance cooperation and ensure an open and stable economy.

In his address, Professor Tong Jiadong, former vice president of Nankai University, concluded that economic integration should be a priority of the countries in the Indo-Pacific region. The economic integration of the Asia-Pacific or even Indo-Pacific region is moving from non-mechanization to mechanization. In exploring mechanisms to promote economic integration, RECP has won more consensuses, he said.
During the two-day forum, experts held
discussions about four topics: Lancang-Mekong cooperation and China-ASEAN ties,
East ASEAN Growth Area and Belt and Road cooperation, joint study on reducing
poverty through education in Lancang-Mekong countries and construction of
China-ASEAN trade corridor. They exchanged views on how to strengthen
China-ASEAN strategic partnership and yield win-win results.
Taking stock of the Belt and Road Initiative, initiatives of Southeast Asian countries, ASEAN integration and current global transformation, the scholars also discussed the future development of China-ASEAN relations.

Experts assessed the progress on poverty relief through education in Lancang-Mekong countries based on educational level, financial policies and cooperative mechanisms. They discussed how to give full play to each country to boost cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.
Participants spoke highly of the forum, saying the forum has built a platform for exchanges and mutual learning. The forum laid a good foundation for the future research of topics related to the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the demands of China and ASEAN countries.
Before the forum, the China-ASEAN University
Think-Tank Network held its third council meeting. The secretariat delivered
its annual work report. Representatives from the council discussed issues
including addition and deletion of members, plans of cooperative projects and
agenda for the 2020 forum and reached agreements.

The China-ASEAN University Think-Tank Network was founded on October 31, 2016 and is comprised of ASEAN University Network member universities and their think tanks, as well as universities designated by the Chinese Ministry of Education. By leveraging key disciplines and talents, the network has built an international platform for China-ASEAN studies and university think tank cooperation and exchanges. The network has provided theoretical and practical basis for China-ASEAN political, economic and cultural cooperation.
